Organized Linen Closet: 3 Simple Steps

An organized linen closet can be elusive… but don’t let that happen to you. I have three linen closets in my home. All of which need to become a little more organized. The one I’m focusing on today is in my bathroom. For a while now, items have been getting stuffed into this bathroom linen closet, without any rhyme or reason. It was time to get in there and organize! Crazy enough, I thought I was going to end up purchasing a lot of bins and baskets for this linen closet redo, but I already had everything I needed around the house! I just repurposed a few items. This is what the linen closet looked like before.

We had towels, toilet paper, tissues, surplus bath supplies, my nail polishes and nail supplies. As well as some dingy bins stuffed with hair stuff and more nail polishes! Originally, I wanted to get the bottom area cleaned out to put two laundry baskets. One for towels and another for my hubby’s workout wear. So of course, the first item on the to-do list when organizing is emptying everything.

1. Empty Everything

Anytime you are organizing, a good rule of thumb is to completely empty the space you’re organizing. Sometimes this leads to finding some long, lost items. It also means that you find out what you really have! I found that we had two completely full rubbing alcohol containers! I also found my pretty extensive belt collection…

2. Declutter and Sort

This step can be daunting, but once you throw on a favorite playlist and dig in, it can actually be fun! When you declutter, you may want to just grab a trash bag for the trash pile, set donations to the side as a donate pile, and the “keep” pile stays put. The “keep” pile can then be sorted into groups or themes to be placed back into the linen closet. The groups or themes that came out of my “keep” pile ended up being towels, surplus shower supplies, and nail polishes/supplies. However, some items that were in my linen closet before, did not end up going back in…

For example, the toilet paper and tissue stash we had needed to go. They were too bulky and taking up precious space that I wanted for laundry baskets. A MUCH better place for extra toilet paper is right near your toilets. So I took the extra rolls up to the boy’s bathroom, the girl’s bathroom, and our half bath. We have cabinets right above our toilets, so the extra rolls are better stored up in those. No one wants to get stuck on the toilet, in need of toilet paper. That’s why right above your head is the best place! The tissue boxes I placed in the upper cabinet in our half bath as well, because it is a central spot in our home to grab from.

Other items that did not make it back in were my hair supplies and my belt collection. My belts were taken into my closet, because that just makes more sense to me. My hair supplies I placed under my sink where more hair supplies have been stored. I wanted everything to be kept together, which also makes more sense to me.

3. Organize and Make It Pretty

Final organized linen closet.

I had some baskets (#ad) that were scattered throughout the house that I grabbed for helping “prettify” this now organized linen closet. I also had some plastic drawers (#ad) from my old classroom that I had recently cleaned up and put back in a coat closet for later use. (Some stickers were being difficult as I tried to remove them from the mini drawers, (#ad) so now that is on my to-do-list.) They aren’t exactly pretty, but they are pleasing to the eye and see through. Being see through helps me to know what I do and do not have. Lastly, I had a random black and white fabric bin to help hold my gargantuan nail caddy.

Now, as I open my organized linen closet, I can easily find what I need. I can also breathe easy knowing that I’m opening a door that reveals a clean, organized space that just makes my heart happy! I’m also super stoked that I was able to pull off this organizing job without spending any money! I hope this inspires you to conquer your linen closet!
